In addition, each "can" is augmented with a Motorola piezo ceramic tweeter (PZT), creating a two-way speaker system. These tiny tweeters are extremely efficient, very loud in the frequency range where they operate, and require no crossover circuitry. They are are also quite inexpensive, and small, which I think, makes them ideal for scale models! They do require additional installation into the layout, but installation, even after the scenery is completed, is really quite fast and easy. Some of the PZT's are built into the scenery and structures as they are modeled, and many of the speakers had to be installed into sections that were already finished.
